SEMA fights for a world where sexual violence is no longer used in conflict, and where States hold other States to account, and meet their international obligations by taking concrete actions to prevent, respond to, and repair the grave harms sexual violence causes.
The Red Line is an initiative led by the Mukwege Foundation seeking to evoke a clear moral outcry against CRSV, strengthen and clarify the legal obligations of States and build political will to achieve a more robust and timely response by States in line with their international obligations
Since the launch of the Red Line Initiative, SEMA has collaborated closely with the Mukwege Foundation to identify obstacles for survivors to access justice and propose solutions to address them.
SEMA members are actively engaged in the Mukwege Foundation’s Red Line Initiative and, at several occasions, were invited to speak at international fora such as the FIGO 2023 World Congress, the PSVI Survivor retreat, the Wilton Park conference on the Crimes Against Humanity Treaty Campaign and the launch of the Mukwege Foundation’s Guidebook on State Obligations for CRSV.
In response to SEMA’s deep sense of anger and disappointment with the decades’ long failure of the international community to put an end to the use of conflict-related sexual violence, SEMA issued its Call to Action. In 13 action points, this document demands concrete action from States in the areas of prevention, response, justice and accountability, and reparations for survivors of CRSV.
SEMA issued its Call to Action not only to seek improvements in their own lives, but to prevent similar violence from happening to others at risk today and in the future. Support our Call to Action here.
