Beata Mukarubuga, known to the world as Mama Lambert, was a true beacon of strength, compassion, and resilience in the SEMA network. A survivor of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi, she dedicated her life to supporting others who endured unimaginable suffering. In 2018, she joined SEMA, the Global Survivor Network, which she described as a family where “we walk hand in hand, fighting for peace and justice.”
Among Mama Lambert’s many accomplishments, she authored “For Those Who Do Not Believe in Miracles,” a testament to her remarkable journey. She was also recognised as a Top 10 Finalist for the Women Building Peace Award and received the 2019 Voice Achievers Award for African Community Service. Yet, her greatest calling was counselling. As Head of Counselling at Solace Ministries in Rwanda, she devoted over 20 years to providing support for women and girls traumatised by the horrors of rape and genocide. Her unwavering commitment to their recovery and empowerment stands as a testament to her compassion and resilience.
In honour of her enduring legacy, we share a heartfelt letter from the SEMA network, celebrating her profound impact on so many lives. The letter can be read below.
?️ We at SEMA will always remember her. Rest in peace, dear Mama Lambert.
